Protected trees, TPOs and conservation areas

Many trees across Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or sit within a conservation area. Carrying out work on a protected tree without the council's consent is an offence, and the liability falls on the tree owner, not the contractor.

Before any work starts we check whether a tree is protected, prepare the council application on your behalf where consent is needed, and carry out the work to the specification the council approves. It is one less thing for you to worry about, and it keeps you the right side of the rules.

What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding uses specialist rotating machinery to grind a tree stump down below the surface of the ground. It is the most efficient and least disruptive method of stump removal, leaving the area level and ready for further use without extensive digging.
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
Not quite. Grinding breaks the stump down in place, leaving the roots to decompose naturally underground. Full stump removal digs out the entire root system, which is far more disruptive and labour intensive. For most domestic and commercial situations, grinding is the more practical, cost-effective solution.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No. Once a stump is ground down below ground level, the tree cannot regenerate from it. Any remaining roots decay naturally over time underground without causing further problems for your lawn, borders or paving.
What happens to the wood chippings?
Grinding produces a quantity of wood chippings, which we can leave on site for use as mulch or garden ground cover, or remove entirely if you prefer. Just tell us your preference before we start and we will arrange accordingly.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Stump removal starts from £150. The final price depends on the stump's size and species, how many stumps need treating, and how accessible they are for grinding equipment. We give a written quote after seeing the job rather than a fixed price over the phone.
Do I need permission to grind a stump from a protected tree?
If the tree was felled with the correct Tree Preservation Order or conservation area consent, grinding the remaining stump does not usually need separate permission, since the tree itself is already gone. If you are unsure of the tree's history, tell us and we can help you check before we start.
