Assessment of what the tree needs

We look at the tree's species, condition and surroundings before recommending reduction, thinning or a lighter prune to match what it needs.

TPO and conservation area checks

Pruning a protected tree still needs consent. We confirm any TPO or conservation area status before cutting starts, since the fine falls on the homeowner.

Crown reduction

Cutting back the outer branches to reduce the canopy's size, useful where a tree has outgrown its space or carries weight-prone branches.

Crown thinning

Selectively removing branches within the canopy to let more light and air through while keeping the tree's natural shape and overall size.

Deadwood and disease removal

Reduction and thinning are also a chance to spot and remove deadwood or diseased branches before they become a bigger problem.

Protected trees, TPOs and conservation areas

Many trees across Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or sit within a conservation area. Carrying out work on a protected tree without the council's consent is an offence, and the liability falls on the tree owner, not the contractor.

Before any work starts we check whether a tree is protected, prepare the council application on your behalf where consent is needed, and carry out the work to the specification the council approves. It is one less thing for you to worry about, and it keeps you the right side of the rules.

What is the difference between crown reduction and crown thinning?
Crown thinning removes branches from within the canopy to reduce density while keeping the tree's overall shape and height. Crown reduction cuts back the outer branches to reduce the size of the canopy itself, resulting in a smaller, more compact tree. Which one is right depends on the tree's condition and what you are trying to achieve, and we will recommend accordingly.
Do I need permission to prune a tree in a conservation area?
Often, yes. Work on a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order or inside a conservation area needs consent before it starts, even for pruning rather than removal, and conservation areas require six weeks' council notice. Breaching this rule fines the homeowner up to £20,000. We check protection status before quoting.
How often should a tree be pruned?
It varies by species, age and growth rate, but crown thinning or reduction is typically carried out every three to five years. Some trees need more frequent attention, others less. We can assess your trees and suggest a sensible maintenance schedule rather than pushing unnecessary repeat visits.
Will pruning harm my tree?
Carried out correctly, crown reduction or thinning should not cause lasting harm to a healthy tree and can improve its long-term health and stability. Poorly executed pruning can cause stress and structural weakness, which is why it matters to use a qualified, insured arborist working to BS3998.
How much does crown reduction cost?
Pruning and trimming work starts from £500. The final cost depends on the tree's size and species, its location, access, how extensive the work needs to be, and whether TPO or conservation area consent applies. We always give a written quote after seeing the tree, not a price over the phone.
What happens to the cut branches?
All arisings are cleared from site as standard once pruning is complete, and we recycle waste responsibly. If you would like chippings for the garden or logs from any larger material, let us know before we start and we will set them aside rather than remove them.
